Dia de los Muertos 2014

Caminando: Dia de los Muertos, 2008 By: Monstrochika

Dia de los Muertos festivities begin this weekend! The souls of our dead ancestors and other loved ones return to visit and walk among the living. We create beautiful altars with ofrendas of all their favorite foods, drinks and treats to let them know we are praying for them and have not forgotten them.

The 4th Annual Beautiful Souls Coffin Show  has quickly become a Chicago artist tradition. All thanks to Delilah Salgado, curator, artist, mentor, and long time advocate for the arts in the Pilsen community. You must come out and see this wonderful show she has put together and the works of art on these coffins will impress!

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 1, 2014 @ 7:00 PM at Cultura in Pilsen, 1900 S. Carpenter, Chicago, IL.

Elevarte Community Studio  is also holding their Annual Muertos de la Risa celebration and Dia de los Muertos procession. They are located right around the corner from where the coffin show exhibition will take place. There is fun for the whole family starting at 2:00 pm and the always stellar Dia de los Muertos procession begins at 5:00 pm!

End your evening with coffin art and DJ beats at the Beautiful Souls Coffin Show! See you there friends.

The Artist Life for Me

Hello once again! This weekend is the 12th Annual Pilsen Open Studios and there is much art to see and events to check out! Pilsen is home to a rich history of local artists, artisans and muralists. I first shared my work during Pilsen Open Studios in 2005 and at many of the alternative art spaces in Pilsen and Little Village since then.

Oct. 18th (12-9pm) & Oct. 19th (12-6pm): Mujeres Mutantes will be at Sip n’ Splash and are #17 on the map!  We are exhibiting work that includes paintings, mosaic, mixed media art, and jewelry. All one-of-a-kind and affordable.

Also, I’ve been working my butt off on a side project for the collective and its finally done! On Saturday, Oct. 18th from 5:00-8:00 pm join us for the Mutantes Zine (Vol. 1) Release Party! Zines will be available for $5.00 and will fund future zines and public art projects by Mujeres Mutantes.

I can’t believe its been almost 10 years since I first showed my work in the Pilsen community! I’ve learned that its about helping each other out. It is now 2014 and all of my best friends are artists. For me, art is not fame or money but a way of life. Keep on truckin’ Chicago!

Sip & Splash Female Art Show

Our art collective Mujeres Mutantes is exhibiting together tomorrow at a neat new spot called “Sip & Splash” in Pilsen. A “BYOB painting experience” as they call themselves on their website. Tomorrow, July 11th starting at 6:00 – 12:00 pm we will have snacks, beverages and art. It is family friendly and FREE! It is part of Pilsen 2nd Fridays so there will be other businesses with local artists work too. Come out for a lovely evening of art in Pilsen.

I continue working on my dolls and these small original illustrations below. We are also signed up to sell at some upcoming markets together. It will be a good time with these ladies I know it! I have been on vacation and kicking back enjoying summer in the city. Until next post everyone!

June: I will sing, dance & shine….

Participating in two upcoming group shows in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood.

The Coaster Show at Cobalt Studio opening on June 13th will be lots of fun! It is my second time participating and it is so cool to see what all the artists come up with for their coaster designs. Opens June 13 and runs through July 13.

Also a one night only pop-up show made possible by Expo Collective. Inspired by the poem “For the Brown Kids” by one of Chicago’s very own spoken word artists. If you are an artist interested in submitting there is still time. The show opens for one night only on June 13th so don’t miss it!

June is always a joyous time for me as it is my birthday month!

I also need to post here that one of the greatest wordsmiths of our time Maya Angelou passed away on May 28, 2014.

When I learned about you as a young girl I was never the same.

“Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.”

No. Nothing ever can or will.

Thank you.

POP-UP ART Galleries 2011

The POP-UP art gallery makes great use of unused storefront space and exposes artist’s works to unbeknownst passersby in the neighborhood. This summer I was invited to participate in several POP-UPs! There was one that unfortunately did not end up happening but here are the remainder…

The Candy Store Pop-Up Art Gallery

@ Right-Brained Studio
